Background: The Texas Electric Choice Act called for a reduction in energy waste and deregulated the energy market. Energy Efficiency programs were formed and contracts were given to a select few companies to meet energy waste reduction goals. A variety of energy efficiency installation measures were approved by the PUCT, with the goal being to reduce energy consumption in residential and commercial structures. There is NO COST to the end electricity user; a certain amount of funds have been allocated annually to install these measures. Please see: http://www.texasefficiency.com for more details about these programs. What We Do: For each structure, we do the following:
Testing - Measure amount of air loss in the structure itself and measure the amount of air loss in the HVAC system
Weatherization - If the structure is losing significant amount of air, then we tighten the structure such that a 10% reduction of air loss is achieved. Reduction in air loss for the structure can save up to 10% on electric bill.
Duct Efficiency - Seal the HVAC system such that a 90% efficiency target is reached. The HVAC system accounts for 60 to 75% of a typical electric/gas bill. Most homes are losing 25 to 40% of their air generated by the system. Sealing the duct system forces more air into the household, causing the unit(s) to turn on less, thus generating monetary savings. It also reduces the wear and tear on the unit because it is having to work significantly less.
*** If the household falls in the 200% below federal poverty income level, then we also install compact florescent lighting. They typically use 75% less electricity and last for 5 to 7 years.
*** In addition, if the household falls in the 200% below federal poverty income level, then we may be able to install attic insulation at NO COST!
Attic Insulation: Inadequate insulation and air leakage are leading causes of energy waste in most homes. Adding insulation saves money it can also make your house more comfortable by helping to maintain a uniform temperature throughout the house. The D.O.E. recommends AT LEAST an R-38 for Texas residences. We receive some financial incentive for installing adequate attic insulation. With this incentive issued to us, we are able to beat a typical insulation companies pricing. For more information click here
Radiant Barrier: While attic insulation reduces heat transfer into the home, radiant barrier actually prevents 68% of the heat from ever entering the attic, and thus the household. Our prices for radiant barrier are substantially lower than other energy efficiency companies in the region. For more information click here
Efficient Lighting: Energy efficient light bulbs such as CFL’s (Compact fluorescent light bulbs) typically use 75% less electricity than incandescent lighting. In addition these bulbs last on average between 5 to 7 years and produce significantly less heat than traditional lighting. The end result is less work on your cooling system and lower electric bills. Because Enertia installs thousands of CFL’s per month we are able to provide these bulbs at below market costs to our customers.
